The Hospice Philosophy

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana affirms life. We recognize dying as a normal process whether or not resulting from disease. Our Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. Our Hospice exists in the hope and belief that, through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.

History

The dream of a hospice for Columbus became a goal for seven community-minded people in October 1978. They met for more than eight months constructing the foundation for Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

In January of 1980, the committee dissolved and a seven-member board took the helm. A medical director and an administrator were hired.

The first two years, Our Hospice was funded by a variety of foundations and philanthropic organizations. The main contributors of “seed money” were BCH Foundation, Cummins Foundation, Irwin Management Foundation, and Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation. Other contributors included donations from service groups, churches and individuals.

Today funding for Our Hospice services includes reimbursements (Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance), memorials, private donations and fund raising events. Our Hospice is certified by Medicare and Medicaid and is a licensed provider of Our Hospice services in the state of Indiana.

In January 2004, the new Hospice Center Inpatient Facility located in Columbus, Indiana opened. This center houses the Inpatient Facility and is the administrative hub for the 16-county service area. There are 14 private patient rooms, 2 family rooms, a family dining room, playroom, library, chapel, and gift shop. The exterior grounds allow patients, family members and visitors serene spaces to sit and relax while taking in the beauty of nature. In addition to the 14 patient patios there are a number of public garden areas: the Meditation Garden, the Terrace Garden, and the Serenity Garden.

The Hospice Center Inpatient Facility supports patients who are in need of intensive relief of pain and symptoms, which have been determined by our medical staff. The center also supports the families and caregivers of patients who are on our service by providing Respite care.  Our overall goal for our patients is to return to their home setting, as our Inpatient Facility is not equipped for long term care.

The corporate office for Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, and the Inpatient Facility is located at 2626 East 17th Street in Columbus, Indiana. The following office sites have been developed to provide care to the multi-county service area: Home Services & Inpatient Facility (Columbus), Our Hospice of Decatur/Shelby (Greensburg), and Our Hospice of Jennings County (North Vernon).

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana has a very experienced and visionary board that is committed to providing quality care to the terminally ill regardless of their ability to pay. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to providing excellent care to every patient and family that chooses Our Hospice.
