In 1994, the Hospice Board determined that it should pursue the development of a Hospice Center for short and/or long term residential stays and for episodes of acute patient care as needed. A Hospice Steering Committee was appointed to create a master plan, raise funds for the facility and see the building project to completion.
A collaborative arrangement was formed with the Columbus Regional Hospital Foundation to work together to raise the needed 4.9 million dollars to build the Hospice Center. A Capital Campaign Committee was formed and the fund drive was officially launched at the Hospice annual Concert held on September 1, 2000.
Construction began on the new Hospice Center in November 2002. The 32,000 square foot building with a 12,000 square foot basement includes:
- Fourteen private patient rooms on the ground floor
- A bereavement center to serve families and community members
- An educational center for the community and health care providers on end-of-life issues and pain and symptom control
- Office space for the clinical and administrative personnel.
The first patient admitted to the new inpatient facility was on February 17, 2004. Hundreds of patients in the 16-county service area have benefited from inpatient services.
